Read the Zusatzblatt before you agree a start date

The plastic residence card rarely tells the complete employment story. Many holders also receive a green folded sheet or separate printed document known as the Zusatzblatt. Its wording can identify an employer, allow a particular occupation, refer to self-employment, or state broader access to employment.

Read the card and sheet as one set

Check the type and expiry date on the card, then read every line of the supplementary wording. An employer name is materially different from a general statement such as “Beschäftigung erlaubt.” Do not infer permission from the card design or from a colleague whose title looks similar.

Compare more than the employer name

A new role may change occupation, salary, working time, workplace, or professional level. Put the current and proposed contracts side by side. Record the planned end date, intended start, and whether there will be a gap.

Ask the competent authority a precise question

The Ausländerbehörde responsible for your registered residence usually needs a concise factual account. State your permit, issue date, present employment, proposed employer, role, salary, and dates. Ask whether notification is sufficient or prior approval is required. Avoid sending an unstructured bundle without identifying the decision you need.

This preparation cannot determine the authority’s answer, but it can reduce avoidable ambiguity.
